No. 24.44.1 Subject Category: Utilities, Alameda Municipal Power / Bureau of Electricity Date or Period: 2003-2008 Object: figurine Description: a figurine made of rubber-like plastic, colored in green, blue, white yellow, of a human-shaped arms and legs, but with a body in the shape of a computer screen with knobs and dials, and the face on a head in the shape of a lightbulb. The figure is holding two cables with different plugs. The screen on the body has an 'a' (lower case letter) with sun-rays, and underneath: 'Alameda / Power & Telecom / A Department of the City of Alameda'. The figure is wearing a white hat with the letter 'a' styled as above. The figure stands on a base formed by the letter a styled as above, on which one can read the text: 'Connect: Cable * Internet * Power'. Sticker on the bottom states 'Made in China'. Size: H. 6 1/4", diam. base: 3 1/4" History of Object: advertising figurine for Alameda Power & Telecom, when the Alameda Bureau of Electricity offered Cable TV and internet services. This was a service greatly valued by the customers/users, but that part of the business ran with a huge deficit, and was sold to Comcast in 2008, and the name of the utility was changed to Alameda Municipal Power. Behind the scenes, the City of Alameda still owns this, initially through the Alameda Bureau of Electricity Improvement Corporation (in existence 2003-2023). Donated by: George Gunn.
