Acc. No. 21.120.1 Subject Category: Interior Decoration; Homes of Alameda Date or Period: c. 1891 Object: hanging lamp Description: Unique brass hanging lamp, maker unknown, with 8 arms, 4 of them pointing up allowing for gas or electric lights, and 4 pointing down allowing for electric light bulbs. The gas-light arms have an elaborate cast shut-off valve, and a tapering pyramidal finial topped with a ball. The whole is suspended by a brass tube. All 8 lines are fitted with brass electric light sockets, either made by Bryant Electric Co., or Hubbell Light Co. Size: (length brass pipe): 58 inches. History of Object: Ceiling lamp from 2124 Alameda Avenue, a Queen Anne cottage built in 1891. The lamp was one of a pair of lamps retrieved in 2021 from a construction dumpster by the donor, who then repaired one by replacing the broken parts with good ones from its twin. The broken parts were discarded. The fitting companies were in business as of 1888, and typically, the lamp would have been converted to full electric between 1900 and 1920. The lamps would have hung in a space with sufficient height, perhaps the dining room or the stairwell going to the 2nd floor. Acquired from: Ross Dileo Catalog Date: October 26, 2021
