ACC. NO. 83.53.1 SUBJECT CATEGORY: Clothing DATE OR PERIOD: c. 1900 (late) OBJECT: Waist cincher DESCRIPTION: Purple and black checked taffeta, sewn by hand. Interior lining of white cotton; with reinforced iron stays. Front of cincher is pierced with holes reinforced with thread and has string ties. Size: (Unfolded) 28 1/2" x 10 1/2". HISTORY OF OBJECT: The cincher belonged to the Misses E. L. and M. A. Dietz, founders of Sunny Cove Baths, Alameda (1881). These ladies came to Alameda from Oakland where their brother had founded the Dietz Opera House. Sunny Cove Beach ran up to the 1950's. The Dietz ladies were the great aunts of the donor.
