No. 21.12.1 Subject Category: industries of Alameda Date or Period: prior to 1970 Object: crate Description: Wooden crate, unpainted and unvarnished, with sides of solid planks, supported with four supports and nailed together, with one side apparently sheared off and fixed with a section of a plank, on which is written in black marker: '[W. F.] Stone & Son, 2517 Blanding Avenue, Alameda, California. The first letters, and the town and state are only partially visible. Size: 20 3/4” x 12 1/2” x 8 3/4” History of Object: small wooden crate with a plank section with address of the boat yard of William Frank Stone and his son. William's father, William Isaac Stone had arrived from England in 1853 at age 20 and earned a Master Carpenter Certificate. He was in the boat building business until 1892 when his son William Frank Stone succeeded him; and his son Lester joined him. William Frank Stone died in 1914. William Frank's son Lester Stone purchased a home in the 1930s, at 1277 Caroline St., where he resided until his death in 1975. He was the uncle of the donor, Roberta Stone O'Grady.
