Description: 1979 Sports Illustrated edition with article on page 36 and especially page 42 and 45, honored Wilver Dornell 'Willie' (or 'Pops') Stargell (1940/1941-2001), baseball player with the Pittsburg Pirates, as receiving the honor, together with Pittsburgh football player Terry Bradshaw, of being named Sportsmen of the year, 1979. Stargell, born in Oklahoma, moved to Alameda with his family as a child, lived in the projects, and went to Encinal High School. Willie Stargell Avenue in the West End is named after him.
