Large model of a three-masted sailing vessel, in a large cabinet with glass panels on two sides, and two glass doors with a brass lock. (no key).
Size: Ship (approx.): L 64" x H 60"; cabinet: H 75 1/4" X W 72 1/2" X D 23"
History of Object:
Model of a sailing vessel built by William Suennen in 1892. It took him approximately two years in his spare time to complete. Not a seafaring man, he would visit sailing vessels, taking pencil and paper to make sketches and notes. All small parts were carved with a pen knife.
Suennen, born in Luxemburg in 1852, a cabinet maker in San Francisco, came to Alameda in 1886, residing at 2311 San Jose Avenue for many years. He died June 10, 1934.
