The California State Parent Teachers Association Honorary Life Membership program was started in the 1927 as a fund raising activity - a PTA organization would purchase the award, and the money raised would be awarded to students needing a grant.
The name of the program was changed to Honorary Service Award in 1969; these can still be purchased in 2024, from the California State PTA (alternate name for California Congress of Parents, Teachers, and Students, Inc.).
