The document is preserved under glass within its original oak frame. Size: H-18 x W-23 inches History of Object: Certificate awarded to Captain N. C. Bates, USMC, aboard the USS New Mexico, as it crossed the Equator on July 6, 1925. Captain Bates was a member of a prominent early family of Alameda which resided at 727 Paru St. One of his brothers married the late Martha Linderman whose grandfather was engineer for the Artesia Water Company located on Thompson Avenue.
