No. 83.19.2 Subject Category: Businesses, Fire extinguisher Date or period: Circa 1940's Object: Extinguisher, fire Description: Cylindrical shaped fire extinguisher which appears to be manufactured from heavy cardboard, with an aluminum top and base. The top has a metal spout opening (for pouring), and a circular metal plug which can be removed for refilling. The body of the cylinder is painted red and contains two pasted on labels, (top) directions, (bottom) manufacturers name, and in bold type "XTINGHUISHER, especially adapted for Gasoline, Oil, Electrical Fires". Size: 9½ inches high, 2½ inches across base. History of Object: Fire extinguisher manufactured by N. R. Elliott, 1414 Fountain Street, Alameda, Ca. This was probably a home industry of Mr. Elliott, who had a United States patent on his product. Acquired from: Harriet Smith Frye Date: 5-27-83
