DESCRIPTION: Folding handle in ebonized wood with a reeded design; has a brass hinge that allows the handle to collapse; covered in black silk.
HISTORY OF OBJECT: Originally used by Clara Watts, wife of Charles Hovey (employed by Otis Elevator Company. They were the parents of Alvin Watts Hovey (bom in Alameda 1897) who served for 23 years as an Alameda police officer until his retirement. They lived at 521 Pacific Avenue. They also had a home built at 1357 Regent Street. Charles Hovey was known to have lived in Alameda in the late 1890's.
