History of Object: Joseph Lee (1827-1880) was born in England and came to California in 1858. Little is known of his artistic training. He developed into an easel painter of nautical scenes that were rendered in minute detail and he was often hired to do portraits of ships. His works are said to number less than 100 and they are present in the major museums of California. This painting has its original walnut frame with a gold leaf liner.
This scene of the yacht, the Startled Fawn, sailing in San Francisco Bay, was painted by Joseph Lee in 1871. The Startled Fawn was 45 1/2 feet long and built by William Stone in San Francisco in 1870. The owner was E. O. Weiner of the San Francisco Yacht Club. A story of Joseph Lee is in the magazine 'Antiques', June, 1969.
