DESCRIPTION: Brass shell casings (two: a. and b.) with brass section topped by a wooden projectile. Wooden projectile is painted grey. Projectile rests on an oak natural finish base. Most likely used as decorative flag pole stands. Size: total height: 25 3/4", brass section: 18 1/4", wooden projectile 7 1/2", base 12" across, 2 1/4" thick. HISTORY OF OBJECT: Used by the now dissolved (mid 1970's) Alameda Barracks No. 635, Veterans of World War I. ACQUIRED FROM: Bruno Pruss, DATE: Original date of donation March 22, 1981

4/6/2020 MvL: current label: Alameda Barracks #635 Veterans of World War I Assorted memorabilia connected with this veterans' organization. Note: The Veterans of World War I of the USA, Inc. was organized in 1948. In 1989, when it hosted the Veteran's Day remembrance at Arlington National Cemetery, there were some 100,000 WWI veterans remaining, whose average age was 94. The organization's executive office at Arlington, VA closed c. 2008, and the US Dept. of Veteran's Affairs acts as the administrator of this organization. The Alameda group, Barracks #635, ceased to exist in the 1970's.
