No. 21.128.22 Subject Category: Citizens of Alameda Date or Period: c. 1910 Object: compass Description: Compass, with legs embossed with elegant floral decoration, with container with spare lead, and original box. Divider has screw which operates the angle of the legs. Underneath the screw is engraved: 'Eagle Pencil Co., New York, U.S.A.' Box states on one side: 'Eagle Compasses & Divider No. 569 Improved with propelling thin lead'. Reverse has image of a boy operating a compass, and a girl observing, with 'Mexico M. Ind. 9793 de 20 Dicbre, 1909. Spare container has rust where it was held in place by the cardboard loop of the box. Pivot point and bridge also shows minor corrosion. Box is a tray and sleeve design. Tray is torn on the corners. Sizes (box): L 2 1/4" x W 5 1/2" x H 1/2" History of Object: Improved Eagle Pencil Company No. 569 compass of the Martin family, likely previously owned by Charles Martin.
