Description: Oil painting on canvas, signed in lower right hand corner, L. C. Earle, 70. Ornate gesso combination gilt and gold leaf frame. Subject, still life, gaming birds.

History of Object: The subject of this painting depicts Illinois gaming birds and was painted by L. C. Earle, a registered artist of that state, in 1870. It was purchased by Elijah Smith & wife Hannah, and hung in their home in Chicago, Ill. It was subsequently brought to Alameda by their children, Henry P., Lura, & Mary Smith, in the 1890's and hung in their home at 2310 Central Avenue, which they rented from Dr. Tisdale. Ms. Lura was an accomplished artist herself, being a porcelain painter and teacher of the craft.
