DESCRIPTION:
Coat to a 2-piece gown. Silk brocade. Lined with tan colored cotton fabric. Has iron stays. Bodice is secured with 18 black buttons and from the shoulder to the hem it has applied jet trim which is also repeated at the sleeves. The sleeve openings are accentuated with black machine lace. It has white cotton rushing around the neck.
HISTORY OF OBJECT: Part of a gown worn by Mary Francis who was Mrs. Abel Thornton.
Abel Thornton was a pioneer Alameda farmer whose land encompassed the area now known as Liberty Avenue. They settled in Alameda in the 1870's.
