It is a black hard leather. It has an insignia panel on front of hat. The panel is red with letters AFD in white. The interior of helmet has a tin manufacturers plate stating "CAIRNS & BROS." manufacturers of fireman's equipment and supplies.

History of Object: Black helmet worn by the men of the early Alameda Fire Department.
