Description: Newspaper clipping, from the Oakland Tribune of Sunday, March 17, 1974, depicting two flying boats, one with a rowboat approaching, what looks like the original Oakland span of the Bay Bridge and a dock, with caption.
Size: roughly 5 1/2" x 5 1/2".
History of Object: Clipping with caption describing start of Pan American Airways transatlantic airline service in 1935, from Alameda, with Martin-built China Clippers, and later - after the sale of the Alameda Airport tidelands to the Navy in 1937 - from Treasure Island's Lagoon of Trade Winds. Photo, taken in 1939, shows a China Clipper and a newer Boeing-built clipper in the background. WWII aviation progress finished the heavy flying boats and Douglas DC-4 landplanes replaced them on the overwater routes.
