History of Object:
Christmas wishes for 1988 to Ida Clinton and her sister (Aneta, unnamed), from Alice Royal (1923-2014), nee Alice Lucinda Calbert. She was born in Allensworth, the first town in California established exclusively by African Americans, in 1908. In 1933 the family moved to Alameda, where her mother, Sadie Calbert, nee Hackett, worked as a governess. Royal graduated from Haight School in 1936, and completed Alameda High School in 1940. After a lifelong career in nursing, primarily in Oakland, and two marriages, Royal retired to Visalia to take care of her mother. There she dedicated much time to preserving the history of Allenstown.
