Acc. No. 81.90.1 Subject Category: Alaska Packers Date or period: Circa 1900 Object: Ship’s Wheel Description: Printed on a small brass plate on the front of the wheel "Made by C. L. LeGal, San Francisco, California". There are ten grip handles around the wheel The outer wheel's rim and inner spokes are oak. The center pin that holds it is a nickel plated nut on the central disk. There are wooden dowels in the construction also to give it extra support. Size: It is 60 inches from grip handle to the opposite grip handle. Central disk: 11 1/2 inch History of Object: This pilot steering wheel was loaned to the U.S. Maritime school by the estate of Carl Verderber. When the school was closed it was donated to the Alameda Historical Society by Mrs. Stephanie Holad in December 1953. The ship it was taken of is not known but it did belong to the Alaska Packers.
