Subject; dog. Size: L-20 x W-18 inches. History of Object: Painting by Hattie McDonell of her family's pet dog. The McDonells were early residents of Bay Farm Island. Hattie (real name Harriet) was the wife of P. A. McDonell. P. A. McDonell was born in Alabama, came to California in 1849, Alameda County in 1852, and is listed in the first Alameda City Directory of 1869. He owned 25 acres of Bay Farm Island land. Harriet (or Hattie) was an amateur artist (two examples of her work are in the museum collection). Her maiden name was Nolte. Acquired from: Roberta McDonell Date: 12-3-85
