No. 21.128.29 Subject Category: Citizens of Alameda Date or Period: c. 1930s-1950s Object: cigar holder Description: an amber-colored Bakelite object, with on one end, a screw-thread leading to a tapered hollow, ending in a narrow channel leading through the object, and on the other side, a flattened oval section. No marking. Size: (approx.): L 2" History of Object: Cigar holder of Charles Martin. Cigar holders were popular from the 1800s and up through the 1920s to 1960s. The holders allow smoking the cigar to the nub without burning fingertips or lips, but distantiate the experience of the cigar. Bakelite was a major form of plastic from the 1930s through to the 1950s, used in cigar holders because it does not melt once formed.
