Description:
Bulbous clear cut glass jar with simple vertical cuts and star pattern at bottom, and smooth circular neck, and silver lid with repousse design of a wreath with three roses. Silver hallmark has a simple (no cartouche) lion facing right, anchor, and gothic 'G', and S 3193. There is no further mark identifying the year.
Lid was tarnished, and was polished by a museum volunteer at this time. Inside was not polished and shows a golden sheen on the repoussed sections, suggesting the lid possibly originally had a gilt wash.
Size: Diameter (approx.): 3 1/2 x Height 3 inches.
History of Object: Powder or dresser jar with lid from the Gorham company, from Providence, RI. The silver mark has no year mark, but no cartouches, suggesting manufacturing date of 1897. From 1865 to 1961 the company name was Gorham Manufacturing Co.
The jar was part of the estate of Nancy Martin, and may have belonged to her mother, Wenonah.
Curator G. Gunn had partially marked the jar with '17.1', but had not completed cataloging.
