History of Object:
Petitions to rezone. A summary is now included. Many are for rezoning to turn a single-family house into (two) apartments, a few bungalow courts (141, 151, 178, 183, 201), but these documents also show a boom in gas stations, including one near the Alameda Hotel (113, denied) until around 1932 further rezones were stopped as there were plenty of stations. Related were used car lots (176, 199) etc. Also toward 1932 there was indication of economic hardship due to the depression, with people requesting permits to do baking in their homes, and not having funds to pay for rezoning (209; 213; 219, 212 (H. F. McCarthy - potato chips)). Other noteworthy items relate to churches (Methodist Sunday School 109; 123 - Catholic Church at Van Buren); industries - Rosefield (194); lumber (105); Clark & Sons (159); Intended Owens-Illinois Glass Plant (203); establishing of an airport (128); a Club House for Boeing Air School on Oakland airport, a mini-golf area (J.G. Croll, 190). Also city initiatives for rezoning the dump (112), the golf course (111), and Leo Purcell swimming lessons in the Whittell swimming tank (193).
