Description: mahogany case with hinged lid, with mechanism that keeps lid upright once opened. Underside of lid houses a scale, marked No. 4377, a decal stating 'Baumanometer, The Super-sphyg, Desk Model, W.A. Baum Co. Inc. New York'; and a glass mercury column, glass mercury reservoir and a rubber tubing with metal end. Inside the case is a fabric cuff, with sewn-on label with stamped: 'Tycos Taylor Instrument Companies, Rochester N.Y. U.S.A.'. Cuff has two tubes, one ending in an inflating bulb. Additionally, a device with small hole, and a stethoscope both are in the case; listening device, case, and stethoscope have labels identifying them as property of 'Dr. Miles'. Stethoscope has text: Fleischer Stethoscope, & Co, Rutherford N.J.

History of Object: A blood pressure measuring instrument that belonged to Dr. Robert H. Miles, long-time Alameda doctor. He was Jack Lalanne’s doctor for many years. Jack Lalanne, born in France, is dubbed the godfather of fitness. He got his doctor, the father of the donor, to start jogging. The donor's mother, Lola Miles, was a nurse at Alameda Hospital and she met Dr. Miles, then First ER intern, as they were wheeling in a gurney with a patient on it. She later was instrumental as a sales person and then manager at “Dorothy’s” sport shop in Alameda.
