Description: An oil painting on canvas depicting a nautical scene with three yachting vessels at sea. It is signed: "C.R. Patterson" in the lower right corner of this painting. It appears to have the original stretcher; however, it is in a patinated modern plastic frame.
Size:L-12.5 in. c W-14.5 inches.
History of Object: A painting that hung in the library of Lester F. Stone, who resided at 1277 Caroline St., Alameda, for many years. The artist, C.R. Patterson, is mentioned in The Marine Journal. New York, in its May 5, 1923 issue. A brief article alludes to C.R. Patterson as a "well-known marine artist" two of whose paintings owned by the New York State Nautical School were being loaned for a "short period of time" to the Maritime Exchange. (Larger format paintings by Charles R. Patterson currently sell at auction for several thousand dollars.)

This is the Truant, painted by Charles Robert Patterson in approximately 1893. The Truant was owned by John W. Pew of the Corinthian Yacht Club in Tiburon. Mr. Pew recognized Charles Patterson's ability while he was caretaker of his yacht, Truant. An exhibition of Charles Patterson's works was organized by the Bohemian Club in San Francisco which led to his national recognition as one of the foremost marine artists of his era.
