Documents found in the attic of City Hall, prior to renovations. These documents were originally held together with a metal clip in a folder (discarded in 2011) with the tab stating: “Census - City of Alameda - 1940”. Documents describe a preliminary result from the census apparently giving a lower number of residents than based on housing surveys, and correspondence regarding a recount. Also includes an undated booklet titled ‘The 1940 Population of the Cities and Counties of California’, publisher William R. Staats Co., which includes statistics from the 1920, 1930, 1940 Census; City Health Department listing of Births and Deaths 1910-1939 (probably dated 1940, L.E. Skilling, Health Officer, to Mr. Schwanenberg, City Mgr), and an excerpt from the U.S. Census Bureau, from 1942, of Population Statistics for Oakland-Berkeley and Adjacent Area.
