Date or Period: 1958
Object Type: miniature vase
Description:
semi-porcelain vase in the shape of an open book, with a transfer image of a red rose an rosebud on one side, and hand-drawn text in blue 'Daughters of St. George P. C. M' on the other, and blue edging, added before glazing. Underside is marked 'G.A.B. '58'
Size: L 3 x H 2 x D 1 inches.
History of Subject:
Vase of the Daughters of the Order of St. George, for people of English descent, which appears to have been partially hand-decorated. The letters 'P.C. & M.' also occur on some of the medals of the order, the meaning is unknown, nor do we know who G.A.B. was. Intriguingly, it is a miniature version of the vase cataloged as 01.36.1, apparently the shape and image of a rose had special meaning to the members.
The order was disbanded in 1976 because of attrition.
This object was in storage awaiting further research - further research is still needed - but as the instructions on disbanding were to destroy all papers and paraphernalia, this may be hard to come by.
