Two-piece satin and floral cut velvet wedding dress of Kate Moynihan. The bodice features a center panel of pin tucks in navy satin. The panel is edged with metal and glass decorative buttons. Sleeves are leg-o-mutton style. The skirt is pleated in navy satin along the sides and has a center panel of cut velvet. The center panel is edged with large self-covered buttons. The skirt has a yoke of rust-colored cotton and a bustled back.
History of Object: Donors indicated that Kate Moynihan wore this dress for her wedding with Fred Brampton. Kate was born in Ireland in 1856. Fred Brampton was born in England in 1853. They married in 1877 (which is much too early for this style of dress) and emigrated to San Francisco (year unknown). They moved to Alameda by 1900 and lived at 2024 Pacific. Fred was a police officer for some time as well as a butcher. They had four children: Louise, Edith, Albert, and Florence.
Florence Elizabeth Francis, nèe Brampton lived in Alameda and attended Haight (now Love) School and then Alameda High. She attended Healds Business School. She was a secretary at Sherman and Clay Music Co. in Alameda. She married William R. Francis on Feb. 24, 1914. William worked with the railroad.
