Size: L 6 3/4” x W 5 1/2” History of Object: short-hand study book, that first was owned by Diane Codino, descending from Italian families that had settled in Alameda by 1911, as farmers and gardeners, and in the garbage disposal business (Oakland Scavanger Company). Short-hand was a system combining simplified letters, common abbreviations, and connected script, often written on special lined paper, allowing for faster writing than ordinary English alphabet. Typically letters or other documents would be dictated to a secretary or typist who wrote them down in short-hand, then later transcribed the short-hand into a typed version.
