Description: weathered copper box, with lid, with remnants of plaster, and paper contents, most either in fragments and placed in envelopes or fused together through water damage and stained with black mold.
Size box: L 9 1/2 x W 8 x H 6 1/2”
History of Object: contents of the cornerstone box of the Washington School, placed there February 22, 1911 - building had begun in 1909. This school was replaced in 1957 by a new school, renamed Maya Lin in 2012. Opening of the box was done by the Alameda Historical Society, in the gardens of Justice and Mrs. Homer R. Spence of 1200 St. Charles Street, exact date unknown, but likely 1956.
