No. 25.97.1 Subject Category: Businesses of Alameda; Restaurants Date or Period: 1890s Object: safe Description: a heavy metal cabinet, painted black, on wheels, with two doors painted red with gold accents. The doors have heavy metal handles. The right side door has a dial mechanism. Along the top edge is painted in gold-paint: 'Crolls Bar & Grill'. The inside of the heavy metal doors are painted white, and show 3 bars which lock the cabinet. Inside this is are heavy metal compartments, with separate locking mechanisms. Size: H. 57” x W 34” x D 28 1/4” History of Object: Safe from Crolls Bar & Grill, 705 Central Ave/1400 Webster Street The Croll Building at the corner of Webster and Central was built in 1879. known as the Britt Hotel until businessman J.G. Croll bought it in 1883. The safe was located inside the restaurant as late as 1980s, but when the business changed name it was donated to the museum.
