Size: L 14 3/4” X W 9”. History of Object: This folder contains communications about minor financial matters; council resolution to employ only U.S. citizens and residents in City posts; claim by City Historian C. R. Smith, who kept records and attended veterans’ funerals and services on behalf of the City but had a salary of $1 (272-13, shortly thereafter increased to $50), for loss of personal property in a March 26, 1931 fire, and getting assigned a room in City Hall to store the records; cost-cutting attempts e.g. contemplating a 5-day workweek for all departments (not practical for e.g. Police, Fire, library); stopping of allowance for department heads to be reimbursed for use of personal vehicles; establishment of a committee for appeals for Fire and Police Department employees; making donations to the unemployment fund voluntary but collected by department heads; complaint about unemployment bureau vs. family services department doing this by W.R. Calcutt, Hardware and Household utensils, 1334 Park St.; complaints about purchase of furniture in Oakland for a new mayor without formal option for bids, including by Barker’s, 1330 Park St.; plans to recoup money off scrap metal sales.
