History of Object: Article about the importance of the South Pacific Railroad in 1880 to Santa Cruz, which mentions that travelers and freight from Santa Cruz were transported to San Francisco from the Alameda terminal in ferry boats owned by the railroad. The largest vessel was the double-ender Newark, with brightly painted paddle wheels. Also mentions Santa Cruz was the location in 1924 of the first Miss California Contest, (with a parade led by the Ku Klux Klan), which was won by Fay Lanphier from Alameda, who would become Miss America of 1925.
