Description: Enlarged hand painted photograph in original gesso frame with combination gilt & gold leaf finish and stylized leaf (stencil) motif.
Size: L-32 1/2 x 37 inches.
History of Object: Framed photo depicting the passenger ship "San Blas" of the Pacific Mail Steam Ship Company, S.F. The framed photo was originally owned and hung in the home of the ship' surgeon, Dr. Henry du R. Phelan (1868-1938), longtime resident of Alameda, living at 1018 Paru St, from the early 1920's until his death in 1938.
The San Blas was an iron steamer built in 1882 by J. Roach & Sons at Chester, Pennsylvania for the Pacific Mail Line of San Francisco. Wrecked 17th December, 1901 at La Libertad, Salvador. When this picture was taken (1898) she was commanded by Capt. McLean of 912 Lafayette Street.
