History of Object:
CVA-12, U.S.S. Hornet, at sea, pre-1970. The Hornet is an Essex-class aircraft carrier, and was at times based at the Naval Air Station (NAS), Alameda. After seeing service on and off since WWII, including being the retrieval vessel for the Apollo-11 and 12 missions, the Hornet was decommissioned in 1970. Eventually she was given historical landmark status, and after closure of 'the Base' opened as a museum in Alameda in 1998.
Part of a series of nostalgically blue-tinted postcards published by Excel Graphics in anticipation of or on commission for the closure of NAS in 1997.
