Description

Acc. No. 25.51.2 Subject Category: Homes of Alameda; Artists of Alameda Date or Period: c. 1940 Object: Drawing, framed Description: A pen-and-ink drawing of a garden and buildings consisting of a wood-shingled pitched-roof building that's placed on the top of a slope, with garden steps at right to reach the higher level, and with other large building behind it). The house has a low middle section with chimney and horizontal siding and a higher section with horizontal siding in the left foreground. Painting is in a gold-painted wooden frame, behind glass and a tan-colored mat. No signature visible. Painting is sealed off on back with tan backing paper. Size: L 13 x W 11 inches. History of Object: A drawing of 2016 and 2018 Clinton Ave., when it would have been Bay shore property. Current view of the 2018 Clinton shows the chimney in the middle of a building, suggesting an addition covering the garden on the right in the drawing. The houses were last sold in 2017. Research showed the longtime owners until then were Albert and Virginia Davis (d. 2017). The artist was Lloyd Dundas Whiffen (1885-1951), born in India, raised in England, moved to California in 1912, and to Alameda in 1931. He taught night school in Alameda. Records indicate 2016 Clinton was built in 1909 and 2018 Clinton was built in 1940, suggesting the dating of the sketch to that later timeframe. This drawing of the house and side-yard, and a companion painting of the view from Clinton Avenue (25.51.1), were donated to the West End Library by a granddaughter of the former owner, and the Library donated it to the Alameda Museum. Acquired from: estate of Albert and Virgini Davis, via Virginia Hill, West End Library. Donation Date: 2/25/2025 Catalog Date: 3/8/2025
