Description:
a. & b, wagon shafts of ash or oak. Some original red paint visible. Squared where attached to wagon (has metal brackets for attaching to wagon. Rounded on one side narrowing to a blunt point. End capped with metal tip. End wrapped with leather from metal tip 41 inches along shaft.
c. Cross bar, original red paint. Bar is 443 inches long. 2 1/4 inch mortice where it attaches to shafts. Carriage bolt through either end before mortice. Beyond mortice there are leather loops.
History of Object: Pair of shafts from the wagon or carriage used by Conrad Roth, old-time contractor & builder of Alameda. They were found in the barn located in the backyard of 2133 Lincoln Avenue, a residence Roth built for himself in 1908.
