History of Object: Memorabilia regarding Anthony F. Corboline, who was featured in a number of boxing matches in the lightweight class from 1910 to 1921 as Joe Ketchel (or Ketchell). 'Doc' Croll was his manager. He moved as a child to Alameda after his family lost their house in San Francisco after the 1906 earthquake. He attended Longfellow School, where he met his wife, Elizabeth. After their marriage he stopped boxing. He was employed as a salesman for Standard Oil Co, originally at the #290, Alameda gas station, later at the #100 gas station. He also was a member of the Alameda Eagles Aerie bowling team, and other social groups. He was also an amateur (caricature) artist, mostly of boxing scenes and personalities. The retained papers from the collection includes what is likely a self-portrait, and a signed piece. One photo was one used in a number of articles, including on the front of 'The Redhead' a boxing magazine, which announces a match, to be held in March, 1920, featuring Joe on page 7.
