Hotel Continental, Rome. Mar.16./85.
Wrote you at Naples, have just rec’d another letter from you, thank yu so much for [...paper torn off…] remembering me.
Dear old Mr [...paper torn off…] gone to rest at last. I am so delighted with Rome, that I hope to spend next winter here, there is so much to be learned, and to be seen here. Have today seen the King + Queen review 6000 troups, Yesterday we were received at the Vatican, neat through the
private apartments; saw the Pope + 2 cardinals, the German Embassador and many high dignitaries. Canon Mori has been so kind to me, and will extend his goodness to Florence to which place we go (and he too) tomorrow. It is 8 hours ride and we will have a Palace Car to ourselves.
We are so well received and so kindly treated everywhere, that we regret every place we must leave. My health is so good and my companions so congenial that every hour is a pleasure to me. How I wish you could enjoy it all with me. My love to dear Grandma.
