No. 81.182.1 Subject Category: Fire Department Equipment Date or period: 1900 Object: Fireman's Helmet Description: Black hard leather helmet, has a shield-like panel with cut out letters "Engine 3 AFD "in red and white. The shield is held in place by an eagle's head made of stamped brass with a manufacturer's mark "CAP. N. Y." The interior has a leather sweat band. Size: 14 3/4" by 101". History of Object: This fireman's helmet is from the Alameda Fire Department, Central Hose Company, No. 3. It was worn by Mr. Lovegrove. He was a volunteer fireman in 1888. This helmet was found in the basement of his old home on Santa Clara Avenue, between Morton and Sherman Street. He was a glazier by profession. Acquired from: Mr. Edward F. Heritage (also a volunteer fireman). Date: April 29, 1952
