Anna J. Spreckels lived at 1807 Lincoln Avenue, Alameda. She was born in San Francisco, California in 1867 and died in Alameda in 1939. She was the daughter of Peter (brewery owner), brother of Claus Spreckels (noted San Francisco pioneer & sugar refinery owner). Miss. Spreckels studied in Dresden, Germany for two years learning all about the manufacture of china for china painting. Her studio was next to her home at 1807 Lincoln Avenue where she taught the art of china painting for over 30 years. She had a special kiln to accomodate all sizes of china pieces. She had many pupils in Alameda. Her works are not signed but are distinguished from other artists by the beautiful free hand flowers and shadowy backgrounds. Her luster pieces are beautiful. She started painting about 1900 to 1930. The Spreckels family were
residents of Alameda as early as 1888. Anna had three brothers, Louis, Richard, & Peter (father of the donor), and one sister, Agnes.
