No. 18.51.1 Subject Category: Household furnishings, decorative Date or Period: 1904 Object: Print, framed Description: An oval shaped wooden frame with a grained finish that contains a lithographic portrait. Size: L-14 1/2 x W-11 1/2 inches. History of Object: A copy of Harrison Fisher's drawing dated 1904 of the famous "Fisher Girl". He was raised in Alameda, attending local schools. He was discovered by Wm Randolph Hearst, and was eventually assigned to New York where he illustrated many of Hearst's publications. Fisher made many trips back to Alameda where his father and brother (both noted artists, themselves) resided. (All three of them are buried in Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland.) 1/11/2021 MvL: current sign: ALAMEDA ARTIST HARRISON FISHER (1870's - 1934) Harrison Fisher was a well-known newspaper and magazine illustrator. He was born in Brooklyn, NY, but was brought here as a child where he attended local schools. His work as a commercial artist was noticed by the publisher Wm. Randolph Hearst, who brought him to New York. He made a career of illustrating magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, with cover drawings of beautiful women who came to be popularly known as "Fisher Girls".
