Scope and Content

Accession No. 11.53.36 Subject Category: City of Alameda Date or Period: 1917-1919 Object: File Folder Description: Acid-free legal size manila file folder with correspondence. Size: L 14 3/4” X W 9”. History of Object: Documents found in the attic of City Hall prior to renovations in the 1990s. Documents were in a crumbling legal-size folder; replaced by a new folder, 2020. Most documents are marked ‘Personal’ in pencil, and appear to be ‘networking’ type communications to/from the City Manager, Charles E. Hewes: letters of introduction, some invitations, thank-you notes for loaned documents, sharing of salary information, equipment, or ordinances with other cities, for instance a Sample Ballot from Pasadena, but in many cases exchanges with the City Manager of the City of Alhambra. From these documents it appears Mr. Hewes appears to have been in favor of a City-County type of government. Also of interest is an undated, unsigned, letter from Franklin D. Roosevelt, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, indicating a piece of equipment (of type ‘binoculars, telescopes, spyglasses, and other navigational instruments’) was loaned and is being returned, with promise of a certificate to follow.
