Acc. No. 83.40.3 Subject Category: Household Date or period: Late-19th century Object: Bell, cow Description: Hand forged cow bell fabricated from one piece of metal. Flat fronted with curved sides, the bell tapers outward from a top upon which has been welded a metal handle. On the top (between the handle) is a protruding metal pin which supports an iron ball clapper. Size: 7 inches high, opening or base-5 3/4 x 3 inches History of Object: Bell used on the cow owned by the Abram Rich family, early pioneers of the West End, Alameda, Ca. Rich erected his home at 1620 4th Street, circa 1868, on land purchased in 1866, from W. W. Chipman. The house is still standing (1983) and is occupied by the descendents of the original owner.
