No. 25.90.2 Subject Category: Fraternities and Clubs Date or Period: 1940 Object: hat Description: black felt fez with off-white top tassel and embroidered: 'Sciots', and a pyramid with the number 8. Inside is a yellow cotton label with printed in black gothic type: ‘Up-town Hatters, Seagrave Bros.’ Size: H: 4”, diameter opening: 9”, tassel: L 7” History of Object: fez of the order of Sciots of Rudy or Walter Taube. The family moved to Alameda in the 1900s, building their home at 1815 Wood street in 1914. Daughter Margaret was born in 1914, son Walter in 1925, and Rudy on 7/2/1925. The Order of Sciots is a Masonic Organization established in 1910, and grew out of the 'Booster Club' founded by Charles H.S. Pratt (1862-1931) in San Francisco in 1905. Sciotry is dedicated to uniting all Master Masons in a closer bond of Friendship, Fellowship and Cooperation. Frank S. Land, founder of the Order of DeMolay, came to California in 1921. Sciotry provided him a car and driver, and he visited all of the Pyramids. He became a Sciot, and laid the foundation for Sciot sponsorship of DeMolay chapters. Sciots Nr. 8 was the Alameda pyramid.
