Photographer: Hartsook (per name on contaminated mounting which has been removed). L 9 1/4” x W-7 1/4” History of Object: Formal portrait of Alameda resident Robert Harding Ames (1900-1982). Born in San Francisco, he was brought here by his mother in 1906 following the earthquake and fire. He attended local schools and held various jobs including serving as an actor in the Golden Gate International Exposition pageants of 1939-1940 (Cavalcade of the West and Cavalcade of America). He worked at the Bethlehem Steel Shipyard during World War II and later at the Alameda Naval Air Station, and ultimately as accounting clerk in the engineering department at City Hall until his retirement in 1966. He had a life-long interest in the theatre and was active for many years in local theatrical groups. Acquired from: Estate of Helene Ames Date: 03/21/06
