No. 25.30.2 A, B, C, D, E Subject Category: WWII (World War II) Date or Period: 1942-1946 Object: Uniform Description: Navy Blue Wool jacket (A), pants (B). coat (C), and cap (D), and black satin cotton scarf (E). The jacket (A) has long sleeves, with 3 white ribbons sewn on the cuff and a two-button closure, and a sailor collar with 3 white ribbons sewn on, and an embroidered star on the inside corners of the flap. It has a small pocket on the right side of the collar, and a slightly bigger pocket on the left breast, which has darted sewing at the sides. A rating patch with white embroidered eagle above a globe, and 3 red chevrons is attached to the left sleeve. A lying diamond-shaped patch is sewn to the left breast, with gold-colored embroidered eagle in a circle. Under the collar on the back is a label with ‘U.S. Coast Guard’. The pants (B) have straight legs, resulting in a bell-bottom effect, and a back closure with laces. There are two small pockets at the front waistband, the left one zippered, and a closure flap, attached to the pants legs with darted sewing. The flap has 3 horizontal button holes on each side, and 6 angled ones along the top, and a center vertical one. The waistband closes in front with 2 additional buttons. The pants have been resized to a narrower size in the back. Coat (C) is double-breasted with 5 buttons on each side (top right one under roll collar is missing) has two outside pockets sewn with darts, and two inside pockets, one high, one low. The lining appears satin cotton and has some tears at the back of the neck and under the arms. The cap has a satin lining and ribbon on the outside, stamped ‘U.S. NAVY’ in gold. The band is reinforced with leather on the inside with handwritten ‘J.W. Walton EM 3/c’ and ‘18-43’. Another sewn-in label has number 7 on it. The scarf (E) has been stamped in white in the center with ‘Walton J.W. 938’. All buttons appear to be made of a hard plastic with an emprinted anchor. Size: A: circa L 24 x circa W 20 inches; B: leg: 43 inches, waistband 26 inches (13 doubled). C (coat): circa L 30 x circa W 21. D: Diameter: 9 1/2 inches. E: Scarf: 34 x 34. History of Object: Blue dress uniform and peacoat worn during WWII by Alameda resident James Winfred Walton (1919-2014). He attained rank EM1/c, Electrical Mate first class Petty Officer.
