Description: a china dish set consisting of A, breakfast plate; B, small plate; C, saucer; D, cup, of German porcelain, hand-painted with a design of fruit on a luster-base, and accented with gold on the rims and cup handle. Plates and saucer are signed at the bottom, ‘Jorgensen’. Cup and saucer have a red manufacturer’s stamp ‘D & ẞ Germany’, plates have a green stamp ‘Thomas Bavaria’.
Sizes: plate A: Diameter: 7 1/2 inches; plate B: diameter 6 inches; saucer C: Diam. 5 3/4 inch; cup D: diameter 3 inches, H. 2 1/4 inches
History of Object: dish set, hand-painted by Alameda-based China-painter Thomas Jorgensen (1879-1943). This set is a good example of the same design was implemented on materials from different manufacturers.
Also, how the painter used variations in materials to increase sales; a similar design already in the collection is accentuated with silver (18.3.1). This set was purchased by Alameda resident, Hilda Hansen, who lived on Pacific Avenue.
