Description: Oblong brass escutcheon with two keyholes (night and day), with circular opening in upper section of plate with projecting lip for insertion of door knob post. Pattern in relief in the Eastlake style.
Size: 7 x 1 3/4 inches.
History of Object: Master front door escutcheon from 1807 Santa Clara Avenue, demolished April, 1982. The house was erected in 1891, by A. W. Pattiani, architect and builder, for Geo. Shreve, a S. F. gun dealer. The escutcheon was found in the yard of the house following demolition by the donor, who was using a metal detector. It appeared to have been in the ground for some time, possibly thrown there during remodeling.
