Description: a circular metal medal, with one attached chain link, with on the front, a design of symbols of wisdom and honor - eagle with spread wings, laurel branch, a globe, rays of light, and a book. Text in an arch around top half: ‘Alameda Grammar Schools’ and horizontally at bottom half: ‘American History Contest’. Reverse has machine-embossed ‘Awarded to’, and engraved: ‘Betty Crawford / WASHINGTON SCHOOL / June 8,1928’.

History of Object: Medal, awarded to Betty Crawford of 1629 High Street, for writing an essay called The Pony Express. Reportedly, a copy of the essay was located in the attic of 1629 High Street but has not been passed to the museum. Betty Crawford was a descendent of W.P. Dillon, early resident of Alameda. She married Richard McIntosh and went to live at 1629 High Street. Betty died in 2006.
